Harvard Finds the Exact Strength Training Dose Tied to Living Longer
Strength training advice usually stops at "lift weights, it is good for you," which is true but not especially useful if you are trying to figure out how much is actually enough. A new Harvard analysis gives an unusually precise answer, so I wanted to walk through what it found and where the real limits of the data are.
- A 30 year Harvard study of 147,374 adults found 90 to 119 minutes of weekly strength training tied to 13 percent lower risk of death from any cause.
- That same dose was linked to 19 percent lower cardiovascular death risk and a striking 27 percent lower risk of dying from Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
- More than about 120 minutes a week showed no extra benefit in this data, a real ceiling rather than a reason to train less.
The study behind the number
Researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed 147,374 adults across three long running cohorts, the Health Professionals Follow Up Study, the Nurses' Health Study, and the Nurses' Health Study II, with up to 30 years of follow up and about 36,000 deaths recorded across the combined groups. People doing 90 to 119 minutes of strength training per week, roughly two 45 minute sessions or three 30 minute sessions, had 13 percent lower all cause mortality risk and 19 percent lower cardiovascular death risk compared to people doing none. Combining that dose with 150 minutes a week of aerobic exercise produced the best outcome of any group studied, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in June 2026.

Why the brain disease finding stands out
The most striking number in the study is a 27 percent lower risk of death from neurological disease, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, among people in that same 90 to 119 minute weekly range. Brain disease risk is a topic most strength training content skips entirely, and researchers point to IGF1's possible role in supporting brain white matter as a plausible mechanism, borrowed from separate biological literature rather than tested directly in this particular study.
Honest caveat
This is an observational cohort study, not a randomized trial, so it shows association rather than proven causation, and it relies on self reported exercise data collected through periodic questionnaires. The cohorts are mostly white, middle aged to older US health care professionals, which limits how confidently this generalizes to more diverse populations, and there is no independent replication published yet. Treat the neurological finding as a strong, specific signal worth watching, not a proven brain protective effect.
What this means for you

If you are already strength training, this gives you a concrete weekly target instead of vague guidance, two to three sessions in the 30 to 45 minute range most weeks. If you are not, this is a reasonable, evidence backed place to start, and you do not need a gym membership or heavy loads to fall inside that 90 to 119 minute window. Pushing well past 120 minutes a week is not shown to buy you anything extra here, which is worth knowing if you have been assuming more is always better.
